Madama Butterfly
by Giacomo Puccini
October 9, 11m, 14, 16 & 18m, 2009
Sung in Italian with English translations

The beautiful, young geisha Cio-Cio San has renounced her family and surrendered all of her love and faith to her new American husband, Lieutenant Pinkerton. Intoxicated by her innocence, he pledges his love for her ecstatically, only to leave her behind when he returns to America. After waiting patiently for his return, she is met with unbearable heartbreak and, ultimately, the choice between life and honor.

Perhaps the most popular work in all of the operatic canon thanks to its swelling, unabashed melodies and a story that touches the depths of the human soul, Madama Butterfly comes to life on the Academy stage in a stunning and acclaimed production by designer Jun Kaneko that marries the classic with the contemporary.
