The all-star cast of Falstaff arrived in Philadelphia to begin rehearsals this week for Verdi’s brilliant comic romp.  Leading this renowned ensemble is Roberto de Candia (The Barber of Seville, ’05) in the title role, with Christine Goerke (Die Fledermaus, ’05) as Alice Ford, Mark Stone as Ford, and Meredith Arwady (Faust, '04) as Quickly.  Philadelphia audiences can see these comic wonders at work when the production opens on May 2nd, but with tickets selling fast there’s not much time left to secure your seats for this perfect spring Shakespearean frolic.

Baritone Mark Stone Performs at
A Taste of Opera on Sunday, April 29!

New location: Academy Rehearsal Hall

Acclaimed British baritone Mark Stone, who makes his U.S. debut as Ford in Falstaff, will perform a special recital "Shakespeare on Tour" at OCP’s lecture series A Taste of Opera on Sunday, April 29th at 1:00pm.  Join us for the final lecture of the season in a new location: the Academy of Music Rehearsal Hall.  Mr. Stone will perform his unique program of art songs set to Shakespearean texts in a recital he also performed last month at Royal Opera Covent Garden. Then the artistic team of Falstaff will lead a roundtable discussion on Verdi’s comic masterpiece based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor

AVA and Curtis Grads Star in Falstaff!

Philadelphia opera lovers are lucky to have two of the country's premier vocal institutions here within just a few blocks of the Academy of Music -- the Academy of Vocal Arts and the Curtis Institute of Music.  Starring in Falstaff are a total of five graduates of the two institutions:  Meredith Arwady, Elizabeth de Shong and Matthew Rose from Curtis, and Jesus Garcia and Evelyn Pollock from AVA.

Argento's  POSTCARD FROM MOROCCO ~ April 19 - 22
Prince Music Theater, Philadelphia

Waiting while traveling is not usually as entertaining -- nor as surreal -- as Argento's seven characters make it in Postcard from Morocco. The stories of their luggage unfold in this one-act collage of music and action.  Rossen Milanov and Andrew Hauze (4/22) conduct the Curtis Chamber Orchestra in this fully-staged production by director Emma Griffin and designer Andromache Chalfant.  Sung in the original English with supertitles.

Performances in Center City, Bucks County, Haverford

Sopranos Manon Strauss Evrard and Joyce El-Khoury and tenors Stephen Costello and Michael Fabiano star in AVA’s production of Manon, Massenet's most popular and enduring opera, and the quintessential example of the charm and vitality of the music and culture of the Parisian Belle Epoque. Christofer Macatsoris conducts and Dorothy Danner directs this fully-staged production which is sung in French with English supertitles.
