Rodrigo (baritone Franco Vassallo) and the Queen Elisabetta de Valois (soprano Angela Brown) share a sweet moment.

Elisabetta de Valois (soprano Angela Brown) was first promised to Don Carlo (tenor Eduardo Villa) in marriage, before Carlo's father, King Philip, chose to take her as his wife for political reasons. Here, they share a rendezvous before King Philip arrives.


King Philip II has summoned the Grand Inquisitor (bass Gustav Andreassen) to ask permission for the most extreme form of punshment for his son, Don Carlo. The Grand Inquisitor asks, instead, for the condemnation of Rodrigo.

The Grand Inquisitor (bass Gustav Andreassen) enters just after Rodrigo (baritone Franco Vassallo) has died from a gun shot to his back.


Tebaldo (soprano Fiona Murphy) and Princess Eboli (contralto Ewa Podles) share a playful moment together.

Don Carlo (tenor Edurado Villa) admits his love for the Queen to Princess Eboli (contralto Ewa Podles).


In an act of revenge, Princess Eboli (contralto Ewa Podles) has taken a jeweled portrait of Don Carlo which belongs to the Queen and has placed it upon the desk of King Philip II.

Princess Eboli (contralto Ewa Podles) begs Queen Elisabetta (soprano Angela Brown) for mercy after admitting to her heinous act of jealousy. The Queen demands that the Princess leave the court and to retire to a convent.
